Festival Scavengers Rules

  1. Teams must consist of four members age 16 or older. All teams must have at least one member who is 18 or older.
  2. The 40 teams selected to participate should arrive at City Art Centre, 2 Market Street, Edinburgh, on Saturday, August 16, at 9 a.m. for team registrations. Teams also may perform good-luck rituals, warm-up stretches, and mind-limbering exercises during this time as they deem necessary.
  3. All four members of each team must be at the point of registration on the morning of the hunt—slackers are not welcome. The original four members are the only individuals who may serve on the team, and they must remain on the team throughout the day.
  4. Participants are asked to treat fellow competitors and visitors to City Art Centre with respect. City Art Centre reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone.
  5. At 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, a list of 100 clues will be distributed to the 40 teams who have been selected to participate. These clues will lead savvy teams to locations around the city where information or an object will have to be gathered, recorded, or created. When teams are asked to gather information rather than an object, it must be recorded and submitted in writing.
  6. Each clue is numbered (1–100); the number corresponds to the number of points that will be awarded for the clue’s fulfilment. The group whose final submission earns the most total points will win £2,000 in cold, hard cash.
  7. Festival Scavengers does not advocate the use of illegal or antisocial methods to secure items; teams are responsible for acting within the law at all times. By registering to participate in Festival Scavengers, team members agree not to act in a way that brings the competition into disrepute or heaps shame upon their team mates.
  8. If any participant is caught cheating, contravening the rules, or bringing Festival Scavengers into disrepute, the individual’s entire team will be disqualified, and very likely booed by onlookers.
  9. All submissions must be presented at City Art Centre for judging at 7 p.m. on the day of the hunt. In order to be considered by the judges, each team’s collected items must be laid out on the team’s designated table by the deadline. Late submissions will be disqualified. Teams are encouraged to return to the Art Centre by 6:40 p.m. to avoid the risk of disqualification. (It’d be such a shame.) No submissions will be accepted before 6:00 p.m.; teams are responsible for storing their collected items until that time.
  10. All items submitted become the property of Festival Scavengers and will not be returned. These items will be used to create a week long public exhibition at City Art Centre 18-24 August, 2008.
  11. Verbal submissions will not be accepted. Internet printouts will not be accepted. No single item may be submitted twice.
  12. All items should be intact at the time of submission. Broken or damaged items may not be accepted. It is each team’s responsibility to make sure that fragile items are protected. Teams are strongly advised to number their items for presentation to the judges.
  13. Each team must nominate one member to present the team’s submission for judging.
  14. Festival Scavengers and City Art Centre reserves the right to refuse any item brought back that is deemed an unacceptable hazard or is considered inappropriate.
  15. If an item is an incorrect response to a clue, points will not be awarded, but the item will be retained for possible inclusion in the exhibition. Judges may use their discretion to award individual points for incorrect submissions that they deem exceptionally creative; the maximum number of points that can be awarded in such cases is five (5), and at least two judges must agree on the award in order for points to be issued.
  16. The winning team will be announced and the prize awarded at approximately 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, August 16.
  17. The judges’ decision is final, and no discussions will be entertained to alter this decision.
  18. In the event of a tie, each of the tied teams will nominate a representative to compete in an arm-wrestling match. We’re serious. The team whose representative wins the match wins the overall competition.
  19. Festival Scavengers accepts no liability or responsibility for participants’ safety or wellbeing during the course of the scavenger hunt. Individual participants are responsible for acting safely while taking part in the competition.
  20. By participating in the event, you agree to abide by these rules, no ifs, ands, or buts.
